Applications:

Equivalent length method is widely used in water supply and other engineering calculations. The minor losses of pipe fittings, appurtenances and valves can be converted to friction loss over an "equivalent length", and thus simplifies the calculation procedure.

However, there are limitations. For example, most backflow preventers, including reduced pressure zone type and double check type, do not follow the exponential rule as Hazen-Williams formula expressed. You may consult the Resistance coefficients of pipe fittings issued by Hydraulic Institute, and/or manufacturer's product specifications. (Read more)
